Ship Breaker Paolo Bacigalupi

"Ship Breaker" is a short YA novel or novella by Paulo Bacigalupi, the author of the award-winning "The Wind-Up Girl." It's set in the near future in a world where oil has become scarce. Format: Ship Breaker, is a dark YA novel that is set in a world that has been devastated by a hurricane. About a quarter of the way through listening to Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker, I found out that it was the first in a series and groaned inwardly. In truth, I chose it from several possible options, and I'm glad I did. The operation, by HMS Protecto, took two hours. In the award-winning Ship Breaker, author Paolo Bacigalupi creates a believable future of drowned cities and a world surviving on the decay of the past. Bacigalupi's second novel is described as young adult fiction and I'm no young adult. This week I'm reviewing another book I *had* to read for class. Intended Audience: Teens and Mature Tweens. Although The Drowned Cities is marketed as a sequel to Ship Breaker, it can stand as a completely independent novel, with only one character from Ship Breaker appearing again in The Drowned Cities.
